What’s in Place
A number of co-management bodies have been established in the Mackenzie Valley and the Inuvialuit Settlement Region to make decisions and provide guidance on environmental and resource management.
Many of these co-management bodies have public registries where individual projects, licences, permits and other authorizations can be found, along with related documents like public hearing transcripts, presentations, background reports, management plans, monitoring results, inspection reports and more.
Land Use Planning
Environmental Assessment
Land and Water Use Regulation
Renewable Resources and Harvesting
In reviewing individual applications and projects, many of the co-management bodies (and GNWT Environment and Climate Change also uses this system to review wildlife management and monitoring plans and reports) are using a website called the On-Line Review System. This approach provides everyone an opportunity to participate in the public review processes. A helpful User Manual is also available. Contact information is also shown for every item that is under review if you need any assistance.
The following are NOT co-management bodies but have some responsibilities for managing the NWT environment and resources (this is not a complete list):
Most of these bodies have important documents or public registries that allow for public comments on individual projects, plans, programs and written policies when they are developed or changed. These can be important opportunities to have a say in the future of environmental and resource management in the NWT. Some of these opportunities will be captured on this website but if you have a specific area or interest, you may wish to monitor these websites and/or use the contacts provided on them.
